This deco style console table was commissioned by a private client in London. The brief was to create a piece of furniture for the grand entrance hall that would sit comfortable with its surroundings but would also catch your eye as you entered the house.
The top of the console table is handmade in a book matched English burr oak surrounded by ebony stringing, English oak and framed with a solid ebony edge. The top is supported by a curved English oak base that is hand formed and jointed into an ebony ingot. The base terminates in an angled English oak base. By the specific selection and hand cutting of the oak the timber fully reveals the beautiful grain through out the piece. The clients enjoy returning to their house as each time they do they notice a different shape and detail within the table.
Neal knew he had fulfilled his brief when the client admitted he can’t stop looking at and touching the piece. It continues to be a talking point every time someone new enters their house.
In addition to the console, a fitted personal library and several pieces for the bedroom were also commissioned. The design was inspired by the existing central oak door which was part of the original house. The client wanted something that would encompass the existing door and compliment the timber stair case and the door on the first floor landing area.
The bookcase has a solid oak plinth with brown oak lozenge details and the plinth steps forward around the solid oak posts. The solid oak posts have a routed out groove detail to match the posts in the existing staircase detailing, and the top section has round details to match the joinery detailing on the stairs and landing balustrade. The lower doors have inlaid panels of Burr oak surrounded by ebony stringings. The doors are frame and panel traditional construction with oak door stiles and rails. The back of the bookcase is solid tongue and groove boards screwed at the top and bottom into rebates to allow each plank to move individually.
The top Oak freize has inlays of Burr oak to match the lower section doors/panels and these are surrounded by ebony stringings. The lower and top sections of the breakfront bookcase have solid oak mouldings following the shape of the cabinet and then returning into the existing solid oak architrave and door. The bookcase was finished in an oil finish to match the existing joinery, balustrade and stair case.
