It’s every designers dream to get a commission as prestigious as the one we received from Lord and Lady Derby to design and build a kitchen and breakfast bar for their home in Knowsley. However we also understood the challenge and responsibility it entailed in providing for the needs of a modern family yet respecting the long history and traditions of the environment. The resulting kitchen combines traditional materials and fine cabinet making with state of the art lighting systems and innovative new materials to provide an environment designed as a hub for contemporary family life.
The kitchen was principally crafted from Walnut with English Sycamore features inlaid. Extreme care has been taken to book match the figured walnut panels, doors and drawer fronts to provide a consistent pattern around the whole kitchen. Nickel details, such as the integrated ventilation grills, were all handmade. The drawers are hand dovetailed and have a base made from Cedar of Lebanon which will emit a beautiful aroma each time they are opened for many years to come. The worktops are made from thick sheets of scratch resistant glass back painted on the underside to reflect light. This is enhanced by the LED lighting system installed into the glass splash backs which can change colour and brightness. The result is not only an effective lighting system but gives the kitchen a special warm and enticing feeling.

We felt our goals of providing a practical and comfortable environment combining the best elements of modern and traditional techniques and materials were achieved, but the important arbiters were Lord and Lady Derby and their family.
