This dining room furniture was commissioned for a Georgian Manor house in Yorkshire. The set consists of a pair of console tables with an English walnut top supported by a hand made curved walnut base, a radially slip matched English walnut dining table supported on three curved hand made bases with gilded ingots, a stunning sideboard with 4 gilded doors and 12 Art Deco style dining chairs in solid English walnut upholstered in a deep buttoned red velvet.
The serving sideboard is hand made in English walnut with four 23.5 carat yellow gold water gilded doors. The hand gilded doors were all laid by hand using the ancient tradition water gilding. This technique of applying genuine gold has remained unchanged for over a thousand years and is still the best way of achieving a rich burnish to the gold gilded finish. The doors are all hung on nickel hinges and are opened via push catches to reveal a beautiful English walnut figured shelf sitting on hand turned adjustable nickel pins. The interior of each compartment is book matched English walnut with a solid English walnut back.
The carcass of the cabinet is hand crafted in English walnut with a radially slip matched English walnut centre to the top, finished with a hand shaped curved English walnut cross banded ogee edge detail.
The sideboard is supported on four solid curved elegant English walnut legs which are all connected by a curved serpentine English walnut stretcher underneath the cabinet. In the centre of the stretcher is a hand gilded 23.5 yellow gold ingot finished and burnished by hand.
This piece was inspired by the Georgian period property it was going into that was originally built between 1837 and 1844. The entrance hall encompasses beautiful architectural detailing, from the Corinthian columns to the dental moulded rose mount ceilings. The piece was designed to sit amongst these beautiful features and complement them rather than competing with them.
This commission led to a further commission for a kitchen, drawing room, library, personal office, bathroom and lounge, plus several occasional pieces.
